‘It’s an honor’: Bali owner who rescued a child from ‘brutal’ abuse says it’s an ‘honor’

A man who rescued his 11-month-old child from a brutal gang rape in Indonesia’s northern Bali province has praised his actions and apologised for the crime.

Bali restaurant owner Atsumi Kim has told the BBC he was “unable to bear it” after he rescued the child from the gang of men on a Sunday night in August last year.

“I was too scared, I was too frightened.

It was a dark and gloomy night and I couldn’t move,” he said.”

It was not my fault they attacked me and I’m sorry for what happened.

I didn’t want to kill my child, but I couldn and I had to do it.

I’m so sorry.”

The father-of-three was on a break from his job as a security guard when he heard his wife screaming.

“She was begging me to help her,” he recalled.

“My wife was screaming for help and I was worried I was going to be raped.

I could not get away.”

But he went outside to help his wife and he saw a man beating her with a metal pipe.

“As I looked at him, he was wearing a long jacket and he had his hands around my wife’s neck,” Mr Kim said.

The man then raped Ms Kim.

“He was beating her.

I screamed at him and asked him to stop.

I don’t know if he understood that I was calling the police, he just ignored me,” he told the ABC.

Mr Kim said he ran to his car and tried to get the man to stop, but he grabbed a metal rod and smashed the man’s head on the pavement.

“The police arrived within a few minutes,” he explained.

“We didn’t know who to believe.

They asked me why I did it, and I told them I was a father.

I was just trying to save my wife.”

Mr Kim has spoken out against the gang, who had been on the run for four days.

“They were raping my wife, stealing my money, but my wife was innocent,” he continued.

“You could hear the screams.

I had a crying baby, she was crying.

The police took my wife away, and that was the end of it.”

He has now paid the ransom of about $200,000 (£150,000) to his victim, but the gang remain at large.

“What a shock,” he joked.

“Every time I think about this, I get so sad.”
