Obama administration says it will stop funding Planned Parenthood
The Obama administration has said it will not fund Planned Parenthood after a congressional investigation found that the abortion provider received federal funding from 2009 to 2013.
The statement comes as the administration faces pressure to address an undercover video showing the organization’s fetal tissue harvesting program.
The Center for Medical Progress released the undercover video last month and released a transcript of the recording this week.
The House and Senate intelligence committees, which are conducting separate probes, are investigating whether Planned Parenthood violated federal law by obtaining fetal tissue from aborted fetuses.
Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, told reporters on Tuesday that he was aware of the decision but said he wanted to see it implemented before the end of the year.
Conyers also said he wants to see an independent investigation by the Justice Department and the FBI.
The Justice Department is leading the investigation.
In a statement released Tuesday, the Justice department said the Trump administration will not reimburse Planned Parenthood for its fetal tissue donation program until the investigation is completed.
Conways statement said that the Department of Health and Human Services is currently reviewing the situation and will provide guidance to the administration on how to proceed.
He said that HHS will continue to cooperate with congressional oversight efforts and will ensure that Planned Parenthood remains free of any potential criminal wrongdoing.
The White House said on Monday that it had reached an agreement with the Department on the funding of the fetal tissue program.
Conners statement said the agreement includes an extension of the period that the federal government would reimburse the organization.
“This is not the end, it’s just the beginning,” he said.
Planned Parenthood has received more than $500 million in federal funding since 2009.
The Trump administration has been pressing Congress to increase funding to the organization and has said the group has been unfairly singled out in the media.
A review of the Planned Parenthood videos, including the audio recordings, show that Planned Pals’ employees were harvesting tissue from the organs of aborted fetids.
